World’s first prototype fusion energy plant - animated fly-through of STEP
Переглядів 2713 роки тому
The UK Atomic Energy Authority is developing a prototype for a revolutionary fusion energy plant, Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (or STEP). STEP creates energy by fusing atoms together to release energy. That process, which is also used to power the sun and stars, can create nearly 4m times more energy for every kilogram of fuel than can be achieved by burning oil, coal or gas. Video c...

Nuclear Explained: How is uranium made into nuclear fuel?
Переглядів 8 тис.3 роки тому
Uranium is the main fuel for nuclear reactors, and it can be found in many places around the world. In order to make the fuel, uranium is mined and goes through refining and enrichment before being loaded into a nuclear reactor. The vast majority of nuclear power reactors use the isotope uranium-235 as fuel; however, it only makes up 0.7% of the natural uranium mined and must therefore be incre...
Nuclear takes responsibility

All energy industries produce waste. For example, waste emissions from fossil fuels include CO2, which results in climate change. Since nuclear fuel is so powerful, it produces a tiny amount of waste or a huge amount of green energy and no CO2.

Why are hardly any other people talking about this?

This is good new that Hinkely point was confirmed as a dead project it was just been propped up by political inertia and industry lobbying. Plan B which has been suppressed by the interested parties is set to be push back into the limelight. We want to know why politions think the very poor can always be asked to subsidize this white elephant..it smacks of further corruption and screwy eyed right wingers who never took advantage of the education offered to them.

The unions point of view is that the gravy train for its membership is now in doubt. Clearly they have now been exposed to sacrifice jobs for their members over commonsense ditching this project. The tax payer has demanded a employment 10 % quotas system on all suppliers of seriously disabled people. Whilst the final bill for the hinkley project will be paid for by the poor in the UK not those who use the electricity and shareholders. If the UK is to become competitive the strike price should be nearer £50 pkw to make electricity affordable within the UK and create jobs. There is no indication that the economics work in this project and risks the most expensive building project in the UK to be a 50 billion pound white elephant the poor and elderly cannot afford to pay for. The PM is right in cancelling this project. Plan B put forward by The BSC Consulting Group UK seems to be a much more economically effective plan an this should now be implemented at lower cost meeting the 50 PKW threshold required to be competitive globally. The now commonsense plan B involves the joint development of mini sodium low grade reactors for the trident project which could be used for regional generation of power at much lower cost. In addition to the deployment of these 7 mini reactors the UK will in parallel develop 7 tidal lagoon sites. The political view is that this not only the low risk option in terms of national, energy security but the costs and proven technology will deliver much sooner in the development cycle reducing overall costs. Hinkley point site could house two mini reactors. While to prevent the costs been placed on the low paid and low income groups all standing charges will be abolished and Californian pricing be implemented in the UK. The days of the nationalized national grid has long gone giving way to a regional energy development strategy and micro generation. moving forward with the development of UK technology in this way is a winner for UK PLC.

I hope this insane idea is scrapped. We should be thinking hydro-electric. Also, every big project done involving the French seems to end up costing multiples of the original estimate; remember Chunnel and Concorde? Also, the proposed site is too close to sea level. if the ice caps melt, it will be underwater and will then be a multi-billion pound lump of toast. Such a project would be an untenable security risk too. Surely it would be infinitely wiser to commission a British engineering company to build a hydroelectric plant harnessing all that endless, free, totally green energy in the tides of the Severn estuary. Surely it's a no-brainer.
